Workshop 9 examines the limitations of “culture” as an explanation of folk beliefs. It does so by recounting a study of attitudes to SCD in what were unique circumstances in Africa at the time: a newborn screening programme in Kumasi, Ghana, that had been running for over a decade, which had led to a cohort of surviving young people with SCD.
