This lecture describes the history and purposes of newborn screening for SCD, examining the social changes produced by a pioneering newborn screening programme in Kumasi, Ghana, and how inequalities in health services provision are illustrated by the late adoption of newborn sickle cell screening in higher income countries such as the UK.
